Entry tags:ficlet, humour, my fic, severus/hermione, summaries

(the entire summary -- mind your 255-character limits, people!)
“You Mister Severus ‘whatever your middle name is’ Snape, are hot,” She grinned as she reached into her purse, and pulled out a vial, “Sober up potion,” she took a drink, and smiled at him, “You know,” she leaned in, and whispered in his ear once again, “

"You, Mister Severus whatever-your-mid...dle..."

Hermione trailed off in mid-sentence as the potion took effect, then blushed a shade of scarlet a Mediterranean sunset would envy as the reality of what she had just said came crashing down on her. She chanced a look into Severus's eyes and immediately regretted it; running up against the force of his gaze was like bouncing off a concrete wall. She quickly peeled herself off of him and glanced down at the vial in her hand, which made it clear: she had grasped the wrong one.

That's the last time I carry that next to my Aphrodillusia, Hermione thought, turning away to face the wall. She groaned in frustration, then hurled the vial against the floor, where it shattered. She gained only momentary satisfaction from this act, however, as Severus's cold voice frosted over her fury at herself, chilling it to a block of ice in her gut.

"Only one person in this room, Miss Granger, is allowed to scatter broken glass upon its floor. I believe that person is me, and not you." He paused, and the only sound Hermione could hear in that space was her own rapid breathing. "But if you doubt my conclusion," he continued in a falsely kind tone, "I should be delighted to afford you a demonstration." The last word was a snarl that would have made a tiger think twice about going after whatever prey Severus might have been pursuing.

Hermione quickly weighed her chances against something Harry had once mentioned about a jar of cockroaches.

She fled.

(p.s. Fanon says "Tobias"; what are you, new? I personally find it too obvious to be satisfying, although it's probably what JKR thought, given how she dealt with other characters' middle names.)

My guess? Tobias is actually his first name. Severus is his middle name. Father wanted him to carry on the Muggle name. Mother always liked "Severus." Also, it can help play into why he joined the Dark Lord. Like Barty. Identified with having the misfortune of sharing their father's name.

My other guess is "Nicholas". You could play into what "Old Nick" means in England, but I'd also use that because the person I relate to Severus' has that middle name. So it's not a real guess. Just what I'd do.

I prefer the former, though. Even though it's very close to Barty's storyline.

Rhythmically I do want a two- or three-syllable name with the stress on the first syllable, but I also want it not to end in "s". Ambrose. Corwin. Eldon. Hadden. Harlan. Lyndon. Owen. Paxton. A lot of those sound like surnames but they could be Eileen's female ancestors' or cousins' maiden names.

I'm not sure how much etymology might come into play here. "Tobias" is ultimately Hebrew, but does appear as-is in both Greek and late Latin, apparently. "Eileen" is an Irish name influenced by "Helen". We tend to assume that Severus must come from Eileen's side of the family, or at least was Eileen's idea, what with all the Latin-like names we see in Wizarding society in canon.

I read a fic the other day, though, that had it actually be up Tobias's line, with the idea that they had held onto some proud Roman-type names. It was a neat thought at least.

Sadly, I think it probably is Tobias because JKR oddly lacks creativity with middle names: Harry James, Ginevra Molly, William Arthur, Teddy Remus. Secondarily Ronald Bilius (an uncle) or Tom Marvolo (his grandfather).

So, if 'Severus' does come from his maternal side somewhere then it's Tobias as the middle name, IMO. If Severus is actual from his father's side, which would surprise me, then perhaps it's something else. If he were a girl it would have been Prince for a middle name I think.

She hasn't even said it in interview canon, AFAIK, so she can go piss up an Incarcerous charm. ;)

I guess what I meant when I said "it's too obvious" is that "it's too obvious to satisfy me", not that it would be too obvious for JKR to settle on. I agree with what you've said about other characters' middle names.

You could always go Italian -- another stereotype.

Or maybe English. Go to http://www.babynames.com and click on "Search Baby Names" in the left column, then search for Boy names, 3 syllables, and any nationality you want.

Some of the English ones sound really promising, in my opinion.

I definitely believe in "Severus Tobias". Either that or no middle name at all.

FWIW I believe in "Severus Tobias" too, I just find it a little disappointing somehow.

Hm..."believe in"... do you think if we clap our hands...? ...naaah. ;)

You think he'll come back like Tinkerbelle in Peter Pan? Worth a shot! That would make for a hilarious fic.
