Tue, Feb. 7th, 2012, 03:54 pm few fic recs

I had worked up a giant rec post (22 links) and DW ate it through the fault of a slip of my fingers, so since I can't face the effort of meticulously filling out the template that many times at once again, I think I'm just going to do them a few at a time. ----- Vitae poscaenia celant by the-watched-potKid Severus, other local kids; PG, 2834 words "Oi, Beaky! Didn't anyone tell you school finished a month ago?" Toby clutched his satchel to himself and stared at them miserably, saying nothing. Sooner or later, they'd get bored. One of the newcomers drew inexpertly on a cigarette, coughed, and flicked the glowing end towards the dry grass where the younger boy stood. A twist of breeze stirred the canal, batting the ember down into the water, where it winked out with a brief hiss.----- Bittersweet by the-watched-potSeverus, Minerva; G, 1800 words A ready-made family, almost wholly Pureblood, if the family tree had been accurate, eager to embrace their prodigal son.
And all that Severus had to do was change his name.----- Saucery by the-watched-potOC house-elf, mentions of Hogwarts teachers; G, 2843 words A tall blue china mug embellished with silver for Professor Sinistra, the coffee within swirled with just enough cream to leave it a fraction of a shade lighter than her skin. No biscuits for the slender astronomer, but a carefully selected peach, sitting demurely on a small plate beside a round-handled silver knife. A heavy crystal glass of hot water with a slice of orange floating in it for Madam Hooch, along with three shocking-pink wafer biscuits.----- This entry was crossposted from http://shyfoxling.dreamwidth.org/317954.html, where there are comments.

Courtesy of sayurikemiko over on deviantArt, I am pleased to present the following hilarious GIFs of Adrien Brody "ranting" about how he would have been better casting for Snape than Alan Rickman, by sort of matching other words to his mouth movements (in the vein of BadLipReading). If you really really think Alan's perfect and don't have at least a sense of humor about that, then these may not be the GIFs for you. Please note her warning/disclaimer: If I offend your sensibilities in any way in regards to Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Snape, I apologize, and kindly recommend you look at something else. I honestly have nothing against Rickman, he’s a great actor in most things, I just can not stand his version of Snape. If you have an obscure and weird sense of humor in regards to a certain book character from HP, perhaps you’ll laugh. The images are rather large (10-15 MB apiece), so give them a moment to load. They'll run more smoothly after all the frames have loaded. 1. Better casting for Snape2. Continued3. Vengeance begins4. The Seven Grievances of Terry Boot by slumber in hogwarts_housesTerry/various (slash and het, but ship content isn't that heavy), PG-13, 6680 words Author's summary: Before he got on the train his mother had pulled him into a hug and told him she knew he'd always been special, and she was sure he'd do very well in all his classes regardless of the subject, and his father laughed and wondered how many versions of Abra Cadabra Terry would have to memorise. When he wrote a few weeks later to explain there was actually a fair amount of Latin to remember, his father's reply included a hint of going on to be a doctor. My comment: "Usually when I open a bunch of tabs off my flist, when I get to a fic over a few hundred words I read the first couple of paragraphs and then either close it or bookmark it for later. Not so this one; I stayed and read the whole thing at once. You've made Terry so very real and I loved the cameos from some bigger players like Draco and Hermione. Rah rah Ravenclaw!" Arithmantic equations would be his new best friend, he decided. They would never abandon him for Quidditch or try to snog him, he thought to himself, pulling open the curtains around his bed with all intention of flinging himself upon it and burrowing beneath the covers with his lovely, glorious, loyal and uncomplicated equations. It would have worked, too, if Lisa weren't already there, eyes red and puffy and cheeks stained with tears.----- And now some artses: Unmasked by = Patilda on deviantART Sirius Black - HP card by = Patilda on deviantART Ever Faithful by ~ Senticous on deviantART HP: Severus Snape Head by ~ cogdis on deviantARTThis entry was crossposted from http://shyfoxling.dreamwidth.org/307253.html, where there are comments.

Have just seen Julian Richings as Death at the end of SPN season 5 which husband is watching on DVD. Can haz as Snape? Perhaps in fantasy epilogue-era films, since he's nine years younger than Alan Rickman but that still presents an age problem. Just stick a long black wig on him. ( some pics )Don't mind me, I'm just being odd. This entry was crossposted from http://shyfoxling.dreamwidth.org/306532.html, where there are comments.
Tue, Sep. 6th, 2011, 12:42 pm couple of Pottermore bits

These are on http://pottermorespoilers.tumblr.com, which is what it says on the tin if you want to look at the material nicely collected (rather than tons of individual comments in that ontd_hogwarts post). Complete (? long, at least) list of Ollivander's descriptions of wand woodsGet this for ebony: ( Read more... )I know it's been fanon since, well, probably the first film that this was Severus's wand-wood just based on the look of the prop, but given that description, I think it may have entered my personal head-canon for him. Full piece on Muggle clothing has this interesting bit I hadn't yet seen (I guess someone had only posted about the first half of it): ( Read more... )This entry was crossposted from http://shyfoxling.dreamwidth.org/305766.html, where there are comments.

Thu, Aug. 4th, 2011, 10:52 am On the nature of Snapes
lilyevans_snape posted an interesting question in her deviantART journal recently: Snape Fanfiction - What is Left to Say...? This was my response, and a response to a response from her. --- It's always been a little dismaying to see comments like "OMG, he's not a Byronic hero, get over it" because to me he's definitely got more than a whiff of that about him. (I wonder if people are misunderstanding "Byronic".) To me he is definitely a dark-romantic character; I understand the problem with excessively romanticizing him (there are parts of his past and his character which are, simply, ugly), but it's not right to just make him a simple bastard without that compelling aura. And you may have seen me rant before about how I don't get or like how "emo" is used as an insult. True he is not the weepy mushy type but it so often comes across to me like people are trying to deny him feeling, deny him the deep passionate heart that makes him him (how else do you carry a torch like that all those years). I've had a hard time finding my way in Snape fandom over the past couple years actually because I don't know what's okay to think anymore. Every time I think I've settled on an expression or version I feel comfortable celebrating or sharing, I see people I consider friends saying "don't you hate it when people ____?" "Oh god, I know, right? how can they think that way?" and I'm like oookay, well, better keep my mouth shut then. Time and again I get the message "it's not okay to think the way you do", from all sides of the map, and I just don't know what to do. As far as fic and what is left to say: It's not so much that I'm out of things to say, or at least not that I am bored of saying the same things over and over again, because I love them and I am not tired of them (as *ls269 said elsewhere). It's more that I don't know how or where to start or how to continue. Or something. I can get vague scraps of ideas; there's a private "ideas" tag in my journal with various bits of bunny fur, and I have like four unfinished fics in various stages in my WIP folder. But mostly I just sit there afraid of doing it wrong, and/or just don't have the energy ("spoons") because I'm so brain-fuzzy these days I can hardly do more than read the internet. Drabble prompts and the like spark no response, not because I think there's nothing left to say about Severus, but because of some fault or empty place in myself. I went way off the original question there didn't I. ( Read more... )This entry was crossposted from http://shyfoxling.dreamwidth.org/300090.html, where there are comments.

Alan Rickman talks about his role as Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and the other Potter movies. As others including drinkingcocoa have picked up on, this bit is very intriguing: ...we did have a phone conversation. She certainly didn't tell me what the end of the story was going to be in any way at all, so I was having to buy the books along with everybody else to find out, 'And now what?' No, she gave me one little piece of information, which I always said I would never share with anybody and never have, and never will. It wasn't a plot point, or crucial in any tangible way, but it was crucial to me as a piece of information that made me travel down that road rather than that one or that one or that one.Like many, I always figured this secret bit was that Severus loved Lily. But I can't call that anything but a crucial plot point, so this really makes me wonder what it was she did tell him that he's been carrying with him all these years! Now that it's August, I turn 33 in three weeks. When did that happen? O.o Here, have some art recs. All are worksafe. I'm going to fall back on just links because man I cannot be arsed to manually construct the dA links with thumbnails and all right now. Except this one. Because this one is majestic. I don't know why punky/gothy/metal/emo/simply-inexplicabl y-rocking-out-on-the-bass Severus pushes my buttons so dang hard but IT SURE DOES. Dee Dee Snape by madoldsquib on deviantART The AU Files: Teal Niffler by someoldcat. There is also a hilarious ficlet to go with it! oh okay I lied. that's this: Some other straight-up Snape art: Half Blood Prince by itheldaSpy by NatallielSnape. by joeyv7Severus/Lily: Severus and Lily by katikut (OMG SO CUTE) The Reason by Cissy-88a l w a y s by RandomsplashesAnd a couple of things spotted on tumblr (with the usual grumbles about how it means I often cannot really track back art to an originator): (thanks to irielle for pointing out the source on this one: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MarsupialMenagerie . Seems like they don't have any of this particular one in right now or I would link to it directly.) p.s. Call him Severus already, wouldja? If you're going to be using other people's first names? Especially in this context, otherwise it makes him seem like something very "other" than her and not also a human being who might have deserved to be loved back. I dunno, I am probably being weird here. I mean, I understand if someone has a considered personal reason to prefer sticking to his surname (like logospilgrim) but in most cases I find his naked surname (as opposed to the respectful "Professor Snape") distancing, unsatisfying, saddening somehow. (Maybe it's just that I can't grok how one would not prefer to wrap one's tongue round the much nicer syllables of "Severus", not that "Snape" isn't fun to play with in some other ways.) ( http://severusandlily.tumblr.com/post/8226037460) I have never liked the smush name "Snily", but saying Severus/Lily would be far too long here. (dangit that dA has removed the automatically-make-an-LJ post share link! apparently that means that the LJ population is now small enough relative to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr that they no longer consider it worthwhile to bother to include the code, even at what I assume would be trivial cost, since obviously it's already been developed (and, e.g., flickr itself still has such LJ repost code, though annoyingly, flickr won't let one repost to any LJ-clone BUT LJ itself, but I guess I digress...) This one especially is just befuddlin' mah dumb cracka mind *: "This really just proves that people are voting for Alan Rickman. Snape obviously has no distinct voice in the books. Really, nobody likes the real Malfoy. They like Tom Felton." - SomeoneOutThereThe underlying accusation here is nothing new, but "Snape obviously has no distinct voice in the books"? No. Distinct. Lucasian hyperspace says: lol. this fic isn't bad, but somehow this summary makes me laugh: Written for the "SEVERUS, YOU MOVE SO SEDUCTIVELY." Challenge. Severus Snape goes out for the night and ends up bringing someone from his past home with him. SSxSB. One-Shot. IN FACT, SO SEDUCTIVELY THAT NOTHING BUT ALL CAPITAL LETTERS WILL MAKE MY POINT. A series of on-set interviews with cast and crew have been released; see http://dhmoviepics.livejournal.com/112160.html for a full list. Alan Rickman's may be interesting to Snapefen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJqejvcpJQw Interesting quotes and choices of words about Snape, such as "[playing the role is] not so much what you choose to do as not disobeying it", "concentrated", "solitary existence", something about him generally being soft-spoken, and "he's only got one set of clothes, clearly, which last quite well" (*chuckles*).
